I have this server at work. Actually, it's my server. It belongs to me. I paid for it out of my own pocket to do things for me. It was never intended to be used at work, but the server that my patron gave me died and I needed to replace it fast.

I didn't even ask to administrate this ridiculous server, it was thrust on me when they got rid of Wayne. When they gave me the job, they didn't give me the resources to run it, they just expected it to work. When the machine goes down, it's an emergency, but when I ask for anything I'm ignored.

Lou is the guy who is supposed to help me move the server software to the department web server. There is actually something worse than refusing to do your job. That is saying that you will do your job, but then never doing it. That's Lou.

I talked to Lou, as you asked.

He told me there was zero chance of getting new hardware and that he will instead look into moving the server software to the department web server.

and he does what he usually does which is he says that he will get back to me tomorrow, and then he never does.

This has been going on since last year when I originally asked for new hardware and he originally suggested moving the server software to the department web server.

I still know nothing at all about the department web server, and thus I cannot honestly say if the server software on DoubleThink can be moved to the department web server.
I'm tempted to pull the plug on my computer right now and take it back home and let them deal with it.

a month ago my manager asked the it people to adjust my access levels in our crappy software so that i can do my job using my own log-in, and they did 1/4 of what they were supposed to. so, last night my manager emailed them the request again, and today tells me that they wrote back saying it'd been done already and they'd gone ahead and canceled his request. thanks guys!

omg tell me about it.

Where I work we have almost ten million different incompatible computer systems, all of which use their own authentication schemes, and of course each password must be changed every three months.

I know my technical team leaders password for one such incompatible system, and when it changes I have to guess what he changed it to. I don’t have my own password for that system, because the paperwork to get one is a nightmare. Fortunately he uses a pattern which is very easy to follow, so as you can see it is a good thing they have such a strict security policy, because it is obviously doing its job in preventing people from doing dangerous things like sharing passwords.

When I first started nothing was setup I had to go around to all sorts of different people and get added to whatever access control lists. My job isn’t to do my job. My job is to get other people to do their job.

Oops. Don’t get me started.
