I wanted to see it with someone who had read and appreciated the books, so I asked if I could see it with e when she went, which turned out to be today.

First I went to Strands and wandered around. Almost the entire top floor is dedicated to art books now, and the photography section is fun. I saw one book about trash and recyclables that I wanted, but for $41 it can wait until I am fabulously wealthy. I also visited the basement where I found nothing, and the history section where I picked up Robert Hughes' The Fatal Shore, which is all about "transportation" or the exile of thousands of British subjects to the continent of Australia. He did a fabulous documentary on modern Australian culture called Beyond the Fatal Shore which appeared on PBS some years back. He is also a republican, which in this context means that he is for an Australian Republic and against the current constitutional monarchy where the Queen of England is also the Queen of Australia.

Then I met e and her boyfriend at the theater and we saw The Guide, which I enjoyed a lot. I got a kick out of the original song "So Long and Thanks for all the Fish". About the only part I didn't particularly like were the scenes with John Malkovich. Maybe it has just been the few things that I have seen him in, but I don't particularly like him as an actor. Yes, they Americanized it, and yes they Hollywoodized it, (and yes, it is indirectly a Disney film), but I think they did an excellent job of adapting the story. Douglas Adams once said that he was slightly uneasy when the scripts of the radio series were released because that was the first time that two versions of the story didn't contradict each other, so I would be disappointed if some liberties had not been made.

I can imagine if you aren't a fan that you might not get it. The guy we were with who had not read any of the books said it was terrible and that it was too slow. I actually thought that it was too fast, and skipped a lot of the best jokes.
