when the youth get involved
Oct. 6th, 2016 01:05 pmMum and Don are back in Salt Lake after their little visit, and the house feels empty again. Even though there are two of us here.
Tuesday was both the VP debate and the monthly Perl Nerds Meeting. I did want to stay at home and watch the debate because unlike a lot of people I find it interesting and entertaining. (At the same time finding it reprehensible). I'd missed the last Perl Nerds Meeting though so I made the trek into the city, after tweeting my intention of not tweeting about the debate.
I am off to @DCPerl tonight and am sad to not be live tweeting the #VPDebate tonight as a result. You are probably thankful but.

The first few minutes was Chas ranting about Perl 6 and Unicode. Chas is annoying. There really isn't anything else interesting to say about him. Then a curious thing happened, we sort of split up into groups and discussed different Perl Nerds things with relation to our interests. Mike noticed me checking out Nate Silver's site impulsively to see how the polls were going. “Don't do it! You'll just make yourself sad”. It was kind of funny. He was reacting to my tweet earlier. Nobody of any consequence follows me on twitter, so it is funny to get a reaction in real life of someone who actually does. On the way to the metro afterword, I asked Mike when he thought the next Legend of Zelda game would be coming out, because I know he's a fan. I'm also looking forward to playing it. Mike is really low key. He is also close friends with Brock (the Fearless Leader of the DC Perl Nerds). They are both from Arizona, which is also the state that I went to University in. (er. go Wildcats)?
There was a new guy there that night who I didn't recognize. A youngin by his looks, but also by his statement “I am really jealous of you guys who grew up in the 80s!” Everyone told him that he was wrong to feel this way and that the 80s were shit and everything is better now. I was not in agreement with that. It is really weird seeing a young guy involved in Perl. The demographic for Perl programmers is largely older, white, male, ... and dying off. If you add rural and religious you'd have the Republican Party. Anyway, it is cool to see young blood involved in Perl though I don't have high hopes that he won't be off doing something else sooner than later.
I caught the last half hour of the debate on the Radio as I drove home. I was surprised to find that my wife Lena had been live tweeting the debate, as my phone was full of notifications.
