When we go to the Inner Harbor
Jun. 12th, 2016 06:23 pmLena had a Nurse Nerd Conference this weekend, which this year was held at a hotel on Baltimore's Inner Harbor. This year we decided to get a room and stay the weekend. During the days I kept busy while she was at the conference and in the evenings we hung out with Lena's Nurse Nerd friends. The problem with Nurse Nerds is that they have no compunction about talking shop through dinner even though it can be gross and very inappropriate. The good thing about Lena's Nurse Nerd friends is that they are nice people and otherwise fun people to hang out with. I really like the Inner Harbor part of Baltimore. It is nice to walk around. The first day was a Friday so I worked remotely. The Saturday I was footloose and fancy free, so I walked over to Federal Hill, which offered a nice view of the harbor. There are some great attractions in the harbor, like the National Aquarium and historic ships. Unfortunately I have seen most of that before, so I split my time between strolling around the harbor and organizing my photographs. On Sunday I decided to go home in the morning, and double back in the afternoon to pick up Lena. Through out the day I heard first that twenty people had been killed in Orlando, and later fifty and it may end up being more, which had me depressed.

One of the historic ships that you can climb all over (fun!) is lightship Chesapeake, which reminded me of Lightvessel Gedser Rev which was parked right outside our hotel in Denmark! A lightship is basically a mobile lighthouse. Most of the surviving lightships seem to be museum ships as they are mostly obsolete.

You can paddle dragon boats around the harbor. Haven't ever tried that yet though.

I also got to see Mr. Trash Wheel in action. This is the strange little vessel when it was parked later that night.

This was at the top of Federal Hill. Not sure who the statue is of, but you will note that the flag behind him only has fifteen stars. This is owing to the Battle of Baltimore, inspiration for The Star-Spangled Banner. I sometimes get the feeling that 1814 was a high water mark for Baltimore, which is funny because what Americans think of as the War of 1812 is really just a tiny little side show in the larger conflict with Napoleon.

The National Aquarium is here. They have a big exhibit of Australian animals among other things. I didn't go inside on this trip.

Traffic cones are one of my favorite photographic subjects. (I am weird).

For a time thought to be the first USS Constellation, later turned out to be the second USS Constellation, though built including timbers from the first USS Constellation. They started rebuilding it into what they thought the first should be like so it is a bit of a Frankenstein's mix of ships. Regardless of if it is a sloop-of-war or a frigate, (or perhaps a little bit of both now), it resides in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

When I got home the second half of my Europe photos were waiting for me on my front door, so I put together an album of travel pictures.
