When I go to a movie about talking animals
Apr. 5th, 2016 07:42 amCouple weeks ago we went up to New Jersey to take care of my wife's grandma while her parents were on vacation. She is over 90 and can mostly still take care of herself, but everyone felt better if we were there just in case. Here is a picture I took from another visit:

I worked remotely from there the first three days that week. On Tuesday after spending most of the day in the house looking at my computer I had the idea that it would be fun to go to the movies. The only thing on that was interesting to me was Zootopia. I proposed it to Lena but it was a little bit of an uphill battle getting grandma to come!
Grandma is a native Russian speaker who knows some English. She is surprisingly good with English given her age and she moved to the states around 2000. Actually she proudly insisted on doing her citizenship test in English when she became an American. Usually with a little patience we can converse to a limited but practical extent. Lately she has been getting frustrated when we don't hit the mark of the first go. Sometimes I rely on Lena to translate for when I have something more complicated to say.
She agreed to go to the movie. I knew that she wouldn't be able to understand most of it, but I figured it might be nice for her to watch the cartoon animals. And to do something together. In the actual event I think she slept through most of the movie, but she did tell Lena that it was a movie about animals living in a city like people do. She is pretty sharp.
