PHP Guy paid me a nice compliment on this my second to last day. He said that the API was one of the few places in the code base which is really well documented and really well tested.

I write tests as I am writing my code. I write the test for the code that I am going to write, run the test to confirm that it fails, then write code and run the test until it passes. You have probably seen the term "Test Driven Development" before. I wasn't really a convert till I saw someone give a talk on it (and demonstrated it by writing a simple test + module). The process is iterative, I slowly build up the unit test and the implementation code, until it approaches completion.
