I get a strange sense of pleasure and excitement reading perldeltas (a sort of change log for Perl releases) for development versions of Perl as they come out. I say strange since we use 5.8.8 for the bulk of all Perl at work, so I am exceedingly unlikely to ever have an opportunity get to use anything in 5.10 for work let alone 5.16 when it comes out next year.
But anyway, hooray for the demise of $[
Back in the days when I was working at The Company and just barely out of school my team's technical leader confided in me that the hardest thing to do was remove old bad code, much harder than writing new code (of any quality). $[ is one of those bad things that has been removed.
