I heard about the fire near Los Alamos from The Facebook, rather than the news, but I've been following the news and The Faceobok since then. There was one spot fire on lab property, which they managed to put out, but other than that it sounds as though it hasn't entered the lab or the town proper.

springem was on IM so I talked to him about it. He lives in Zurich now, but he still has family in LA. He said that his family was nonchalant about the whole affair because (as he put it) the last two fires had pretty much burned up everything. I don't think he understood (and neither did I at the time) just how fast this fire was growing though. In 2000, there were several days before they decided to evacuate the town. In this case the fire started on Sunday, and a mandatory evacuation was declared some time I believe after noon on Monday. I may be overly sensitive after the huge loss of life in the Victorian fire a few years ago.

I sent a message to Becky, an old friend of mine. Her family decided to stay while the evacuation was voluntary, but left when it became mandatory. They are in Albuquerque now.

Ronin doesn't live in Los Alamos anymore (At least I don't think she doesn't—we're facebook “friends” but I almost immediately blocked her from my “friends” feed when I added her), but her sister was visiting and she posted something to The Facebook about cooking up some phoney emergency with her dad to get by the national guard to go protect their house. Really? Is your home really worth your life? What are you going to do, get out the garden hose? What is especially retarded is that their hose is nestled right in the forest, so that thing is going up like a candle if the fire gets there. Ronin and her family are long standing anti-government libertarian wingnuts, so it doesn't particularly surprise me.
