Visiting Tyler
Feb. 6th, 2005 01:19 amCalifornia is great. I just turn on my notebook computer and somebody just gives me free wireless Internet access just like that. So generous of them. It is wonderful that wireless technology is by default insecure.
Thursday
I flew into LAX an hour early. It was still light outside at 6:20 when I did so. My luggage was waiting for me when I got to the carousel. I think my bags actually caught an earlier ORD to LAX flight than I did in order to accomplish this. Tyler picked me up and he asked me if I wanted “a thing with stuff”. I acknowledged in the affirmative and we went to Jack in the Box, where I was tempted to actually request “a thing with stuff”, but I chickened out and ordered a sourdough jack instead. We discussed the possibility of parking a few blocks away so that we would have to walk to the establishment so as to make the experience more authentic, but we didn’t in the end. Back in college we used to eat a lot of fast food. I think the last time I went to Jack was five years ago when I visited Tyler the last time.
I made the observation (several times) that it isn’t cold here, as it is cold in New York.
Friday
We went to a French bakery shop, which turned out to be of the same set of restaurants as a place that I took Melly when she came to visit me, and we spent a weekend in New York City. Then we went to the Getty which is a huge museum complex with modern architecture and mostly non modern art. They had a cool collection of vintage black and white photographs. It is situated on the top of a mountain and there is a wonderful view of LA as it races off to meet the ocean in the west.
I made the observation that culturally LA looks to the east (Asia) and that NY looks to the west (Europe), although geographically they look in the opposite directions. Tyler enjoys Japanese and other Asian cultures, and he has decorated his room with some colorful posters which I assume are aname. He has never been outside of the country but he would like to visit Japan someday, when he has the time and resources to do it properly.
After that we went to get Mexican for a late lunch. I had a cheese enchilada and two tacos (two individual tacos this time, not one “2 tacos” as Tyler had at Jack I. Box). It was delicious. The variety and availability of Mexican food is so much better in California... the area of New York that I live seems to specialize in Italian, so if I want good enchiladas or posole back home, then I have to make them myself.
The we went to a video game store and picked up the modern belmont adventure Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. We then settled down to the serious business of playing video games. Tyler showed me an easter egg in Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, the first game that he worked on as an audio integrator. He works for EA. Right now he is working on the next Medal of Honor game, and given his dedication to quality his levels are going to have excellent sound.
Saturday
We had kind of a late start due to being up late the night before playing Castlevania. Once we did get going I had the best breakfast burrito without green chili that I have ever had. This was consumed in a diner which had pink cows on the walls. Kathy from Moostan would trip out. Then we went to Ameba record store, which is a bit like the CD Despot from when we were in college, except 100 times the size. I was particularly impressed with the organization. They not only had world music, but categorized it into specifics like Ska and Asian. They had an impressive Trance section adjacent to the Electronic section.
I met Tyler’s girlfriend Kimmie. She seems nice. We finished the night off with the 3rd street promenade where we enjoyed some street performers.
Sunday
We don’t have any firm plans for tomorrow. We prefer flexibility. The thinking is that we might hit the beach and see a movie before I fly to Australia.
