Just came back from Sideways directed by Alexander Payne (Citizen Ruth and Election). Best Nebraskan director ever. Observations:

  1. I love the way that Payne's the characters aren't "Hollywood" pretty, and they live in a fairly believable world. In Election he had Mathew Broderick get a $10 haircut so that he would look like a high school teacher. Windshields are usually left dirty, as they are in real life. In one shot I could see the sun reflecting on the grime in the car window. In Sideways, the one pretty guy was an absolute jerk, and even though he gets married in the end, you know that he is so shallow and a stinking liar that it won't last and he will get what he deserves (my thinking anyway).
  2. I think I liked the use large apertures to blur the background. I say think because I would like to think they were intentional. Especially in the scenes in which Miles was drunk as a skunk.
  3. I really liked the scene in which Miles and Maya are talking wine on Stephanie's back porch, especially when Maya opened up. I hated the fact that it was filmed with what looked like daylight film using tungsten lighting. I hope it was intentionally, I really do, because I love this director, but I still hate the effect.
  4. Second favorite scene was when Miles opens up the '61 and drinks it by himself in the fast food joint. This obviously symbolized the fact that he is living his life, instead of waiting for someone to complete it for him. Only then does he get the message from Maya and things are tied up. It is very cliché, but it doesn't bother me one bit.

I wish I had seen the film with Tyler and could get his take on the film. I do miss going to the Gallagher and paying to see a movie so that we could see the free movie afterward.

Interesting to note that Payne's next film listed on IMDB is titled Nebraska coming out next year.

Now I really want to see A Very Long Engagement. I have to say, looking at the poster, and given the name I was turned off, but the preview I saw before Sideways totally made me want to see it.
