The Plot Thickens
Aug. 22nd, 2005 03:53 pmI was just now walking outside of my office and I overheard Doug and my
archnemesis Frank
[1] talking about computer geek things and something occurred to me. The
only possible explanation for the complexity which is computer geekdom
is to keep computer geeks employed. Think about it. What is worse s
that I may be part of the conspiracy without even realizing it (until
now).
That is all for now.
[1] Who is my archnemesiss solely for the reason that he went to ASU. Okay, I admit it, I don't really have an archnemesis, but I use Frank as my archnemesis since an ineffectual archnemesis is better than no archnemesis.

Date: 2005-08-23 07:12 am (UTC)Because computer geeks are all “this is neat I think I will tweak it” when it is already perfectly good, and also because Bill Gates is like “this one guy suggested this one feature, so we should inflict it on the entire windows user base, of course.” Multiply each of those scenarios (respectively) by the number of computer geeks and the number of megalomaniac high tech CEOs and there you have complexity as it exists today in the computer biz.
Solution?
Destroy all computers and start over, being sure not to let the computer geeks or the megalomaniac CEOs in charge.

Date: 2005-08-23 09:22 pm (UTC)i was referring to word choice in the sentence "The only possible explanation for the complexity which is computer geekdom is to keep computer geeks employed."
explanation implies that keeping them employed is why they are geeky.
solution implies that keeping them employed puts their geekiness to use and helps keep them from annoying the rest of society.

Date: 2005-08-24 06:52 am (UTC)I think my intended point is different though. The only explanation for why computers are so hard to use (their complexity) is because the people who write software (computer geeks) like to play with their toys and tweak things, which doesn’t always produce software which is easy to use. My intent was to imply that computer geeks were keeping themselves employed for their own ends rather than society employing them for theirs.
I was in a meeting once when we were discussing how to convince users to use new feature X. One guy was like well there is this advantage, and that advantage. There was also Ed, who is by far the best software engineer I have ever had the honor of working with (seriously, I totally miss being on his team), and he was like, “they should use feature X because it is cool.”
Although you have a good point. Now can we prevent them from annoying me as well?
