First of all, let me start with a physical description. Doug looks exactly like the school bus driver in The Simpsons. exactly. He's been in EDA for a long time and he is responsible for a lot of the infrastructure which is used by all of our applications. He knows his stuff. Sometimes I wish I was working on the things that he works on, as I think my skill set is better suited for low level system work than what I am working on.
I got into an argument with Doug early on in my career at EDA over which compiler we ought to be using on Linux. I didn't really understand all the issues at the time, and I more or less made a complete ass of myself and as a result lost some credibility with him and his clique of computer geeks.
Just recently an issue came up where I had to defend a suggestion that I made to Doug. He was a little upset about the whole issue because what it amounts to is a bug in the operating system that we use. Instead of making it worse though, I prefaced my response with "I do understand your reluctance, and I strongly agree this is an *** bug." and then explained how my suggestion might be easier to implement than he originally thought.

Doug's counter response was to
- suggest a way we could implement my suggestion and
- push back on the customer to find out why they are using the feature which exercises the bug and see if we can get them to avoid it.
