In high school, my friend wingated was the sysadmin in the computer loft, so when he created an account for me on our schools backward SunOS 4.x machine he set the temporary password to "maclover" as a joke. Like a "haha Mac sucks" kind of joke. This was in the days before windows, where DOS ruled the PC and was much more stable than the pre-Windows95 Windows of the day, although DOS was somewhat arcane and had some historically arbitrary and frustrating limitations (and anyway we all preferred UNIX).
Yesterday I got my G5. Although I think maybe it should be called my G5s since there are actually two G5 processors in my new machine. Apple naming conventions for systems seems to be a bit odd. My machine is called a PowerMac G5, although all of Apple's machines now come with PowerPC processors. What makes something a Power* rather than an i*?
I love my new machine though. It is ultra fast. Only a day into being a Mac user I hear myself saying things like "Windows Sucks" or "PCs crash". (I don't really think of my Linux boxes as PCs, although technically some of them are). The last time I got a 64bit machine I went around telling everyone that I was getting a computer that was varoom varoom fast. I am obsessing about this computer less though. Yesterday after work instead of playing with my new toy, I went on the farewell hike for Sock Kihm, who is flying back to Singapore today.
I feel like I am totally following the trend on this one. Many of my friends already have Macs, for various reasons. Either they couldn't stomach paying the Bill Gates tax, or they just hate Windows, or there is some application which is more at home on the Mac than in Windows. So in an effort to follow other trends that have already been trod before me, I went to Verizon this morning to get a camera phone. I also switched plans and so I will be paying half of what I used to be paying thank you very much. I wanted to get a camera phone because Amanda has one and she does fun things with it.
