My mum casually mentioned to me that she is off to see the President of China when we were talking on the skype just now. She is in Beijing, and she was much more nervous when the Chinese delegation (which didn't include the President, or presumably anyone nearly as important) was coming to see her in Sydney. I am quite jealous of mum and Don's trip to China, so I instructed them to take many photos, including the one pictured. Apparently, mum and Don explained, you can have McDonalds delivered in China. Last night I was listening to NPR on the drive home and they had a story about a restaurant in China that delivered hot pot and waiter in China, and they mentioned in an off handed remark that China was a country in which you could even have McDonald's delivered, and I thought to myself, that's right I remember this photo. I still contend that if things go wrong and we kill each other off in a nuclear war there will be nothing left on the planet except for roaches and McDonalds.

On Aunty last night they had a brief interview with an idiot on Wall Street. He said something to the effect that: this isn't China or Cuba, this is a democracy, and that means free markets. Where do people get this idea that democracy is synonymous with market fundamentalism?
