In two weeks I start a new position as Senior Software Engineer at a small but growing company in Annapolis, Maryland. It promises to be a much better fit for me than my current position contracting for The Bureau[1] for a number of reasons:
- Better pay
- Better potential for growth
- Less formal dress code
- Fewer silly regulations
- ...
I don't want to bag on The Bureau too much, because there are some interesting problems to be worked on there, and the people have been kind to me for the most part. I don't even think the company that pays my salary is terrible, although I do think that being a contractor does suck in lots of small ways, sort of like death by a thousand paper cuts.
I had a little paper journal in which I started when I drove to DC from Salt Lake City that includes a number of pithy observations about working at The Bureau that I intended to write up here. Maybe if I find the notebook I can entertain you with a few stories of the stupidity of working for the federal government (I already have many stories about the stupidity of working in a large company from my days at The Company, 2000-2006). I also promise to come up with a good cryptonym before I decide to quit this job, which hopefully won't be for quite some time!
